The Dark Void (Jan 2010 - April 2010)

DigiPen - Freshman Year Project, Semester 2

The Dark Void was my second semester team project, where the restriction was to have everything rendered in a console window, thus the graphics are comprised of ASCII characters. The Dark Void is a turn-based strategy game similar to the likes of Advance Wars. In this game, you are able to find equipment dropped by enemies and attach it to any unit you want; this can give them boosts to stats, a new weapon, etc. Credits to Jake Leonard, fellow student teammate, for making the trailer.

My accomplishments on this project:
  • Created a particle effects system and programmed intricate visuals and scene setups for in-game unit attack phases, an intro cutscene and the background of the main menu
  • Wrote weekly producer reports and took responsibility to ship the game despite sudden unexpected team member issues
  • Made ASCII art for the game world and composed chiptune music to further enhance the game's retro theme
